Imagining the nation. Knowledge and representations of the territory in Turin 1848-1911

The exhibition depicts the role played by Torino’s cultural scene between the 19th and 20th century in the development and diffusion of the knowledge and representation of Italy. Through the exploration of the synergy of various social figures and institutions with the places and spaces of knowledge – from the University to the publishing industry, from schools to the great exhibitions -, the show illustrates the birth of new historical, scientific and geographical knowledge, which contributed to give form and body to the image of the nation.

The exhibition, organized by the Department of Historical Studies of the University of Torino in collaboration with the Museo Nazionale del Risorgimento Italiano that hosts it, is composed of 169 pieces, inside an itinerary which is articulated in five thematic sections: The Dynastic Myth of the Savoia, The Italian Nationality and the Exiles – Knowledge, Representation and the Administration of the Territory – Divulging the Image of the Nation – Nation and Territory in the Great Exhibitions.
